COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT
The growth of tourism in the area generates revenue for the host communities hence changing their attitude and perspective on conservation. 95% of Kiho Lodge staff are from the community.
While constructing the lodge, 90% of the labour force was from the community. Therefore community members feel inspired for being part of something big. We believe that tourism should not come to take away land and deprive the host communities of their homes but rather uplift lives and change communities for the better.
Sustainable Toursim
SAFETY
Despite the success of ecotourism, there are still several threats to the ongoing survival of mountain gorillas in the wild. A more tangible threat associated with tourism is that humans and gorillas are genetically close enough so there is a real risk that people can pass a viral or bacterial infection on to a gorilla.
Therefore to reduce this risk, there is a restriction on the number of people allowed to visit a troop. All visitors should wear surgical/ face masks and keep a few meters away from the gorillas.

Plastic Free Lodge
In line with conservation and sustainability, we run a plastic-free lodge as we understand the effect of plastic on the environment. The major impact of plastic on the environment is that it takes many years for it to decompose
Biodegradable Materials
A minority of plastics are “compostable” or “biodegradable”, which means they can be reduced to their chemical components by, say, your home compost. Other plastics can only be successfully composted by industrial or municipal facilities after first being separated from other, non-biodegradable, plastics.
Reduction of Carbon Footprint
We advocate for the reduction of carbon footprint in order to save the environment through the following strategies
